Process Tools
To take mission investing into practice a foundation looks to various implementation tools to move from strategy and policy guidelines into dollar commitments. Foundations and their consultants have produced a variety of implementation tools to assist with deal analysis and the investment decision-making process as well as monitoring and reporting on those investments. For example:
- A foundation may seek a financial consultant to provide professional investment service and guidance on creating a mission investing policy, asset allocation strategy, and ongoing monitoring and reporting. See the RFP (PDF) produced by Godeke Consulting to help a foundation select a financial consultant in mission investing.
- Due-diligence and documentation toolkits guide foundations in the evaluation of MRI and PRIs. See toolkits (PDF) provided by Raul Pomares with the KL Felicitas Foundation and Doug Bauer of RPA.
- The PRI Makers Network provides a series of templates that cover product areas that include for example, due-diligence checklists, loan agreements, linked deposit agreements, term sheet templates, risk analysis templates, and PRI legal rulings. PRI Members connect directly to the PRI Makers Resources page (non PRI Members follow the link to Become a Member).
- The Kalamazoo Community Foundation provides a Program-Related Investment (PRI) and Business Related Investment (BRI) Evaluation Checklist (PDF) covering due diligence questions, including questions specific to if the PRI's recipient is not a 501 (C)(3) and commitment letter checklist.
Additional process tools will be made available and can be found on the Resources section of this web site.
