Mission Investing for Trustees (PDF)
What is the role of foundation trustees in facilitating mission investing? More specifically, what are the sorts of legal and capacity-related barriers that trustees face in implementing mission investing strategies? On June 7, 2011, More for Mission hosted a small roundtable meeting of foundation trustees and stakeholders to discuss just these questions. We brought together a group of foundation trustees engaged in mission investing and related stakeholders from the foundation, financial consulting, money management, and legal communities to help us outline potential research and engagement opportunities to better analyze the actual and potential role of trustees in advancing the field. This first step, encapsulated in this summary, focused on outlining straightforward challenges and testing intuitions developed through ongoing interactions with foundations trustees and other stakeholders.
Cash as a Mission-Related Investment (PDF)
This paper explores the asset class of cash as a vehicle for mission investing. Its goal is to help foundations who wish to engage in the practice of mission investing—leveraging endowment assets to achieve financial and mission goals—by providing a simple, practical guide to mission-related cash investing.
More for Mission Fall 2009 Survey Results
A new survey conducted by More for Mission of 39 foundations in its network helps to quantify the amount of assets respondents have in mission-related investments and demonstrates that this practice is expected to continue to increase. According to the survey’s findings, at the end of 2008, mission investments as a percentage of total assets equaled nearly 5%. When projecting anticipated mission investments for 2009, the percentage of assets rose to nearly 7%. The results signal respondents’ expectation that they will continue to increase their commitment to this emerging practice.
The Evolution of Responsible Investment Consulting - This paper is a summary of the Responsible Investment Consultants meeting of 35 investment consultants, asset managers and other stakeholders from across the country that gathered at Boston College to discuss the state of responsible investing consulting and the potential for the emergence of responsible investment as an investment consulting discipline. It is a discussion of the topics covered during the day as well as challenges and ideas for moving the field forward.
The Spring 2009 More for Mission Newsletter highlights examples of mission investing in practice from the More for Mission Leadership Circle and news and events on the Campaign.
